A Force for Good

BYU student Paige Merkley is addicted to service. On Sunday afternoons she drinks root beer floats and chats with her adopted grandparent. During the week she choreographs and dances with her friends at Adaptive Show Choir practice and eats lunch with unhoused community members at the Food and Care Coalition. Then on Saturdays she plays basketball with the Special Olympics Collegiate Teams program. All of this while keeping a full schedule of classes. Go Forth to Shine

In April more than 7,100 students completed their BYU degrees and were honored at commencement. The event featured encouraging words from graduating class representative—and peacemaker (more on her below)—Mirabella Keogh, BYU Alumni President Derek Miller, BYU President C. Four Prophetic Insights

When President Dallin H. Oaks, leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, visited BYU in March, he shared how we all can overcome doubt: “Get closer to our Savior Jesus Christ.” And he detailed specific ways to accomplish that goal—strengthening our faith, increasing our humility, seeking help from others, and being patient. The Great Debate

Alex and Mirabella Keogh disagree on a lot of things—it’s what brought them together when they were dating. “We actually started keeping a little tally of ongoing debates. Those disagreements became an excuse to hang out,” says Alex. Inspired by President Nelson’s talk “Peacemakers Needed,” Alex and Mirabella (who spoke at commencement) started the Peacemaker Project, an academic student association that encourages productive debate and teaches students how to disagree peaceably. Making the Cut

At just 19 BYU freshman golfer Kihei Akina has hit some big shots: He’s the youngest-ever winner of the Utah Open (in its 99-year history), a two-time collegiate invitational champion (back-to-back wins in March), and recently second-place finisher in the Big 12 tournament. Going the Distance

BYU engineering students have won the Shell Eco-Marathon for the third time, creating a vehicle that gets 2,145 miles per gallon—enough to drive from Utah to New York City on one tiny tank. The team also clinched the overall Global Championship, besting nearly 80 teams from the United States, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Colombia. 50 Years of Women’s Conference

Thousands of women recently gathered for the 50th anniversary of BYU Women’s Conference. What was once a simple student gathering has grown into a multigenerational conference with global reach—see this timeline. A few highlights: Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson spoke about opening the door to the Savior; Sister Tamara W. Runia, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, spoke on the power of Christ’s light; and Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Sister Susan Bednar gave a closing keynote about rising up to our potential through the merits of Christ.
