Imagine giving a three-minute oral presentation, a stand-up comedy routine, a vocal solo, and answering multiple questions about another country’s culture and history. Now imagine doing it all in Mandarin Chinese on live television. What started out as an attempt to get a few extra-credit points in his Chinese class ended with BYU student Josh Robinson (center) placing third out of 157 competitors in the Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition.

Four BYU sports teams have claimed spots in the top 10 for just the second time in 20 years. No. 4 women’s soccer remains undefeated after a 4-2 win over UC Irvine on Saturday. No. 9 women’s volleyball returned home to defeat LMU on Tuesday. No. 4 women’s cross country claimed first at the Bill Dellinger Invitational while the No. 2 men’s team took second. On Sept. 20 U.S. Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch visited BYU, where, in a question and answer session, he pled for civility and shared his fear that American civic education is deteriorating. Gorsuch is currently on a book tour for A Republic, If You Can Keep It.

BYU alumna Marsha Mark-Baird displays the flag of Trinidad and Tobago after competing in a track event.
She came to the United States from Trinidad, rode a horse, and thought all her dreams had come true. But BYU alumna Marsha Mark-Baird was just getting started. Despite hardships, trials, and setbacks, she earned a master’s degree, competed in two Olympic games, and helped set a relay world record in the 2016 World Masters Championships. She’s now a social worker in the Provo School District and a mother of three young sons. Read more about Mark-Baird’s journey.
